I think a more realistic way for Universal to increase CD sales would be to develop some kind of device that erases the memories of everybody on earth so that no one realizes the Internet still exists.

Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.

Carl Sagan (via emilyposts)

How come nobody in this generation has attempted to capture our imagination the way that Carl did?

Any programmer exposed to the bitter realities of working in a soulless commercial software company, shuffling bits on a hard disk for the same salary every month eventually develops a certain protective shell. Neither speed nor genius are rewarded, so often a professional developer begin to develop a very careful, measured style that ensures he’s never caught out by either bugs or management, which he considers to be pretty much the same thing.

With many thanks to Darth Panda for Buzzing this.

karlaakins:

Professor destroys laptop in class. Some colleges are allowing teachers to ban laptops in the classroom.

A class I recently took allowed us to use our laptops, but if we were caught doing anything but taking notes, we would be asked to leave class immediately.

I’m glad we were allowed to use our laptops because this grandma would never have been able to take notes at the speed of lightning. The professor lectured FAST.

I don’t think my wrist can survive even one lecture taking notes. Not after so many years of abuse courtesy of poorly designed keyboards. The worst part is I never took a typing class, but two decades of typing kind of taught me how to type 20 WPM using two fingers and without looking at the keyboard.

It seems unfair that Republicans get to use public bathrooms for anonymous sex and Democrats just get berated in the shower by Rahm Emanuel.

I couldn’t drive my Toyota or use my PlayStation, so I just called up my Grandpa and complained about the Japanese with him.

Sweatpants that read juicy across the back and shirts that read sexy and Jesus is Dead are distractions, some of this city’s school officials say, and would be removed from the academic atmosphere if a school uniform policy were implemented.

Uniform differences

I went to public school all my life, with one exception: summer at a catholic school because I was trying to graduate early from high school. Each and every damn year I spent in the public school system in Puerto Rico I had to wear a uniform:

  • Kindergarten - Red shirt, blue pants (I didn’t, I was skipped to first grade, but my brother did).

  • Elementary - Light blue shirt, navy blue pants, black shoes.

  • Junior High School - Khaki shirt and pants, black shoes.

  • High School - Light blue shirt, black pants. During my senior year we went on a faux strike demanding to be allowed to wear jeans. After a half a day of noise the principal allowed it, but only for the seniors.

Funny thing, the summer I spent at the catholic school I was not required to wear the uniform.

I have no idea what is going on in Puerto Rico right now, but the uniforms have been around for decades, it is a very quick way to spot truancy, or older kids sneaking into the school for whatever reason.

If I had to guess, I’d say it must have to do with Chile’s persecution and attempted prosecution of their great former leader, and a personal hero of mine, Augusto Pinochet – who, it should be noted, had never been convicted of a crime when the Lord called him home three years ago.” The popular host of ‘The 700 Club’ and longtime bingo circuit icon also added, “General Pinochet not only assisted the CIA in the overthrow of Chile’s Marxist government, but is widely credited with personally arranging the meetings of hundreds, perhaps thousands, of his countrymen with Jesus.

That’s, what’s the word, totally batshit. Yeah, that.
